Senate Approves Armstrong's Accountability Bill For State Aircraft

The state Senate unanimously approved a bill requiring the Department of Transportation to keep an aviation log detailing the use of state-owned airplanes.

Senate Bill 1201 spells out twelve pieces of information to be contained in the log and requires the information to be posted on the Department's website.

"Controversial uses of the state planes and spotty record-keeping of the flights caused concerns in recent years.  This bill makes sure that records of flights will be adequate for review by officials and accessible for public scrutiny," Senator Gib Armstrong, sponsor of the bill, said.

"Taxpayers expect us to insist on accountability measures wherever and whenever we can.  In the case of the state planes, it is both easy and necessary to accomplish.  When accurate records are kept, people can check to make sure that the planes are used only by authorized individuals and only for purely governmental purposes," Armstrong stated.

A state audit released last fall criticized lax record-keeping on the usage of state-owned planes.  The bill is based in part on the recommendations in that audit.
